Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z:
Suteki da ne?

Kaoru cleared her throat, adjusting the bandages on her fists again. She glanced up at Momoko, the energetic redhead seemed on edge. Her stretches were stiff and her eyes were unfocused, staring off into the distance. The green-eyed tomboy narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms, clearing her throat again. Finally, Momoko jumped and turned to her. Kaoru smirked; Momoko quickly giggled and blushed.

“Sorry, Kaoru-chan, were you saying something?” she replied, a sugary day-dream tone clinging to her voice.

Kaoru just laughed, “C’mon, Hero Maniac, get your head in the game! You’re supposed to be helping us get back in shape, yeah? So let’s get back in shape!” Kaoru threw a few mock punches. She grinned, satisfied when she saw the impressed looks on her friends faces.

Miyako clapped, beaming, “You’ve really been practicing, Kaoru-san! I almost couldn’t see your punches!” she exclaimed.  She and Kaoru laughed, while Momoko nodded, breaking herself free from her daydream.

“Right! Right! It’s time for Powerpuff Girls Z’s Ultra Special Super Training! Now!” Momoko posed, hands perched lightly on her hips, “I’m not gonna go easy on you two, we need to get you used to your powers again!” She frowned and pouted when the two laughed.

“You’re really taking this seriously, Momoko-san,” Miyako commented. She shook her head and nodded, “I will too, I promise,” She turned to Kaoru; the boxer nodded, the sass lifting from her smirk, replaced by honest emotion.

“Let’s do this,” In a flash, the three were replaced by their alter egos. The three threw their weapons aside. They needed to adjust to their powers slowly, or Professor Utonium was certain there was a possibility of a negative reaction.

Buttercup raised her fists and frowned, “You sure about this, Blossom?”

Bubbles nodded, taking her own fighting stance, “Your hands are still…”

The two trailed off as Blossom laughed. She shook her head and folded her arms behind her back, “I think I’ll be alright, you two are...really...out of practice,” she teased. Buttercup frowned and in a flash was at her, taking a swing. The blow slid cleanly through the air, leaving its owner confused. She felt a small kick on her back and stumbled forward. Buttercup turned around in disbelief, watching as Blossom dodged a strike from Bubbles and lightly kicked her forward just as she had with Buttercup.

“Wow, you’re really fast now,” Buttercup mumbled.

Blossom giggled, “I’m not that fast, you’re both just slow! We’re going to fix that! Now, don’t hold back! Come at me with everything you’ve got!”

Buttercup and Bubbles traded a glance, then charged at their leader. Blossom laughed; it was a good distraction. Anything to keep her mind away from-

“K-Kuma-sensei!” Momoko squeaked, cheeks turning pink as soon as the instructor approached her. It was the next day, before class. She’d run a little late and missed meeting up with Miyako and Kaoru, but apparently her tardiness had allowed her to run into...him, the mysterious, amazing, charming new history teacher: Kuma-sensei. She squeaked again when he bowed and held her copy of Neko Majin Z out to her.

She blushed; he blinked, then laughed nervously, turning an adorable shade of red himself.

“Ah! My apologies, Akatsutsumi-san! I had forgotten. No, no, here allow me,” He placed the book in her bag and bowed again. “Thank you so much for the opportunity to read it, it was delightful! I am not surprised to find you’ve read it before. I made a note to look into other volumes in this series, should I be able to find them. The humor, the storytelling and memorable characters, truly remarkable! It is always fascinating to see what-” he trailed off, hearing the bell ring. He laughed and blushed again, scratching his scruffy hair.

Momoko hadn’t noticed; she continued to stare at him, cheeks pink and eyes sparkling. Every word he said, and he said so many words, was fascinating and amazing and so much more interesting than whatever lecture she was going to miss. She jerked upright, her daze broken by electricity through her arm when he placed his hand on her shoulder.

“Please, Akatsutsumi-san, allow me to escort you to your homeroom. This tardiness is entirely my responsibility, I shall not see you punished for this. No, let us get you to class,” He continued to speak and Momoko continued to stare at him. Her heart pitter-pattered in her chest and her mouth grew dry. He was still touching her shoulder, gently leading her to her room.

He slid the door open and every eye turned to them. Momoko stared down at her feet, grinning like a fool and blushing furiously. Kuma-sensei was speaking to her homeroom teacher, apologizing for her tardiness. She had already been late, but he was taking the blame.

“I look forward to seeing you all later, do take care to not strain yourself, Akatsutsumi-san,” Kuma-sensei bowed and took his leave. Momoko stumbled to her desk, only to stare at it in a daze. The teacher was speaking, but all she could think about was...was...

“Kuma-sensei?” Miyako asked, surprised by how quickly Momoko dissolved into blushing and giggling. Momoko was a girl of many affections. Miyako recalled her having a new crush every week before, and every one brought this bashful, giggly side of Momoko to the surface. But this...a teacher? Momoko liked older boys, but, “Your crush is the new history teacher?” she asked once more to clarify.

Again, Momoko just giggled and nodded. She was so lost in her daze she didn’t even notice when Kaoru plopped down on her other side. The tomboy glanced at Momoko, then at Miyako.

Jerking her thumb at the redhead, she asked, “New crush?” She smirked when Momoko squeaked and Miyako nodded. Kaoru popped her box lunch open, “Time to eat, so, who is it?” she asked between rapid fire bites.

“Well, it’s um…” Miyako tapped her chin, unsure how to really take the news. She hadn’t met the new teacher yet, but she couldn’t help feeling concerned. Momoko frequently got crushes, but most of them scarcely knew who she was. This was someone a bit closer...and if something happened and Momoko got her heart broken, it was someone she’d have to see every day. Miyako frowned and caught Kaoru’s attention.

“What, that bad?”

“Kuma-sensei!” Momoko squealed, taking a shaky bite of her lunch.

Kaoru blinked, a confused frown tugging at her lips, “Who?”

“He’s the new history teacher, taking the place of Ono-sensei while he’s away on a family emergency,” Miyako explained. Kaoru nodded, mouthing an ‘Ah’ before going back to eating. The blonde frowned; how could she take this so lightly? Having a crush on a teacher, especially a new one that no one knew, was sure to end poorly for Momoko! Kaoru had to know how fragile their friend could be when it came to romance and crushes and getting herself hurt. Was she really the only one who could see how bad this could end?

“Somethin’ wrong with Kuma-sensei?” Kaoru asked, disappointed to find that she’d already finished eating. She glanced at Momoko’s lunch and made a snatch for some salmon. She pulled her hand back with a gasp, nursing a sharp red pinch. Somehow, Momoko could barely hold her chopsticks, but she could still use them well enough to defend her lunch…

Miyako sighed, “I’m sure Kuma-sensei is nice. I just...think that you may be taking it a bit too seriously, Momoko-san. I mean, he is a teacher.” she tried explaining.

Momoko shook head her, “No, no! He’s not just nice! Kuma-sensei is wonderful and smart and charming and-” she squealed, blushing again, “And he likes manga! He borrowed my copy of Neko Majin Z and said he loved it! Mou!”

Kaoru and Miyako traded a glance; the former clicked her tongue, “Wow, that kinda hits all of Hero Maniac’s checklist,”

Miyako glared at Kaoru, “Don’t encourage her, Kaoru-san!”

“What? She seems happy, you’re just jealous,”

“I, wh-what? I...I am not!”

While her friends argued, Momoko hummed and flipped to another page of her manga. Sailor Moon...Tuxedo Mask was so much older than her, but they still worked, right? She giggled into another bite and flipped another page. Maybe he would like to borrow this one, too?

“Kare! Another tome!” Akuma exclaimed, throwing himself down in his throne and flipping it open excitedly. This one, he hadn’t even needed to ask! Momoko had found him after school and offered it to him. Yes! Somehow, in a single day he had won the foolish girl’s trust. Now, now she would bring him the instruments of her own demise! This one...what had she called it? Sailor Moon? “Hm...a girl who transforms by the light of the moon? Similar, so similar to Powerpuff Girls Z and their transformation with that accursed light,” he mused, flipping to another page. Unlike Neko Majin Z, which had been in the middle of an arc, this one must have been the very first tome in its line.

He hadn’t learned much from Neko Majin Z, but he had learned much from Momoko, Hyper Blossom, herself. She was an excitable girl, eager to accept any affection offered her way. He need only smile and offer a kind touch and she turned to putty in his hands. How could one so easily swayed stand so strong against him? What power did she possess that allowed her to face down the darkness itself and remain full of hope?

She wasn’t popular, not like her companions. Bubbles and Buttercup, their human names he’d already forgotten, seemed to be held in much higher esteem by their peers. Yet, she had earned their friendship, and despite having other companions, the two seemed to go out of their way to be with Momoko.

She wasn’t popular, but the friends she had were fiercely loyal. Bubbles, in particular, he noted with a scowl. He’d overheard the way she seemed wary of Kuma-sensei. There was no way a mere mortal could see through his disguise, no. Especially if the clairvoyant of the three failed to see him for what he truly was. No, she was clueless, she only spoke with passion to defend her friend.

“Friend,” Akuma murmured, entranced by the manga in his lap, “What is a friend? A companion, yes, but what is it that binds them? They follow her despite her flaws, despite her weakness. They see her heart for what it is: a weak, fragile flower. And yet, they place their trust and hope in such a pitiful thing? “ He had heard Buttercup speak to Momoko the day before, when they thought they were alone. When they were certain Akuma Daimao was nowhere to be found.

Momoko was certain they could defeat him. And Buttercup believed not in their own abilities, but in that certainty. Momoko, her leader, her friend, believed it to be true, therefore it must? Such foolishness...such pathetic human hoping.

Akuma growled, his claws digging into the pages. These insufferable little girls. How dare they hope against him? How dare they believe that such a weak creature could ever conquer him? He, who the Heavens feared. He, who would one day take this and every other world. He, who would then crush them all with his own two hands.

They didn’t deserve such hope. They didn’t deserve to believe they could conquer him. All hope, all faith, it all belonged to him. He alone decided fate. He alone knew the outcome of their conflict. Their destiny belonged to him, and he had decided already they would fall. The world would belong to him, and even Buttercup and Bubbles would know the truth. Their pitiful faith in this weak little Blossom couldn’t save them.

Darkness appeared around the Master. The cave filled with unholy howling and his flaming eyes darkened. Deep within him, something began to form. With a roar, he ejected it from his chest. The black pool quivered and groaned on the ground. Still growling, Akuma opened his eyes and fixed it with a penetrating stare.

“Nanimokamo...go, take back this world that belongs to Akuma Daimao. Remind them who it is that controls this land, and who it is the threads of fate themselves lead to. Take from them everything, all that will belong to me. Go, my Greed,” The little black sack began to giggle wildly and sank into the ground.

Akuma blinked and looked around, sniffing the air and growling. He’d called for Kare some time ago...where had the miserable creature gotten to? His gaze drifted back to the manga in his lap. “But more importantly...who is this Tuxedo Mask?”

XxXxX

Professor Utonium sighed, scratching his chin. It was no use...he’d torn through every last note and scribbling from his ancestor, but couldn’t find so much as a mumbling about the demon lord Akuma Daimao. There were plenty of writings about Kare, more than he’d ever expected. But something darker...something more terrible than even Kare? Not so much as a peep.

“Could it be for a reason?” He mused to himself, getting up and stretching. He groaned and rubbed his shoulder. He’d been slouched over that desk for hours now, even standing felt wonderful! Professor Utonium sighed, picking up another book and walking to the main part of the lab. “There must be something...anything here. Something we can use!”

He’d let them go unprepared. He’d nearly seen Powerpuff Girls Z, three girls who’d grown close to him as daughters, die at the hands of that monster.

“Die…” he whispered. Through everything Powerpuff Girls Z had faced, they’d not faced death so directly as they had since that creature appeared. First the monster that broke Blossom’s hands, and then Akuma Daimao himself.

If he couldn’t find something to help them, he thought as he took a seat at his computer. The Professor clenched his eyes shut. Despite Blossom’s bravado, he knew the truth. And he was certain that, under all her bluster she knew the truth. If they didn’t figure out something, some kind of weakness...they couldn’t survive their next fight.

“No, I won’t let that happen,” he hissed through clenched teeth. There had to be something, anything. He wouldn’t let that monster win again. He wouldn’t let him hurt his girls!

While the Professor wasn’t watching, a dark cloud floated through the lab, giggling softly to itself. The swarm of seeds disappeared into the study, swirling around the table of notes and books. With a little cry, the seeds poured into one of the notebooks. Suddenly, the pages began to fill up. The room echoed with a dark laugh as the cloud vanished into thin air.
The next day, Momoko finally spill the beans about her crush to her best friends. While Kaoru and Miyako argue over whether or not it's okay for Momoko to have feelings for a teacher, Akuma plots his next attack on Tokyo City.
